About the event
Despite strong evidence of its benefits, access to harm-reduction services for addictive problems remains limited in the U.S. This workshop will explore the sociopolitical backdrop to U.S. drug policy, research, and treatment, and provide attendees with core harm-reduction information and strategies for working with addictive problems. Understanding the impact of U.S. drug policy on research and treatment for addictive problems will help attendees empathize with client experiences and support client autonomy in clinical work. Life saving strategies such as naloxone administration will be covered, along with population specific concerns for acutely impacted communities (people of color, LGBTQ+).
Dr. Camlin will discuss the history of U.S. drug policy and research, outlining how racist policies motivated and shaped drug laws and continue to serve as a vehicle for the oppression of minority communities. Dr. Severino will discuss treatment considerations for the LGBTQ+ community, highlighting the value of affirming care and self-efficacy. Mr. Aaron Burns and Mr. Elon Burns from A New Path will collaborate with Dr. Camlin to provide hands-on naloxone administration training. Dr. Horvath will conclude the workshop by distinguishing self-empowering from powerlessness approaches while helping participants identify underlying similarities across mutual help groups for addictive problems.
